Setting Up Email in Apple Mail on macOS

This guide shows you how to add your DuelHost email account to the built-in Mail app on macOS. These instructions work for all recent versions of macOS.

Prerequisite: Make sure SSL is enabled on your domain before proceeding. See our SSL setup guide for details.

Step 1: Open Mail and Add Account

  1. Launch the Mail app on your Mac
  2. If this is your first account, you’ll see the account setup screen automatically
  3. If you already have accounts, go to Mail → Add Account from the menu bar

Step 2: Choose Account Type

  1. Select Add Other Mail Account from the list of providers
  2. Click Continue

Step 3: Enter Basic Information

Fill in the following details:

  • Name: Your name (this will appear as the sender name)
  • Email Address: Your full email address (e.g., name@yourdomain.com)
  • Password: The password you created in DirectAdmin

Click Sign In.

Step 4: Configure Mail Server Settings

If Mail cannot automatically configure your account, you’ll need to enter the server settings manually:

Account Type: IMAP

Incoming Mail Server

SettingValue
Servermail.yourdomain.com
UsernameYour full email address
PasswordYour email password

Outgoing Mail Server

SettingValue
Servermail.yourdomain.com
UsernameYour full email address
PasswordYour email password

Replace “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name.

Click Sign In to continue.

Step 5: Verify Server Settings

After setup, you can verify or modify your settings:

  1. Go to Mail → Preferences (or Mail → Settings on newer macOS)
  2. Click the Accounts tab
  3. Select your account
  4. Click Server Settings

Verify these settings:

Incoming Mail (IMAP)

  • Hostname: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Username: Your email address
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS (usually automatic)

Outgoing Mail (SMTP)

  • Hostname: mail.yourdomain.com
  • Username: Your email address
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS (usually automatic)

Step 6: Complete Setup

Click Save if you made any changes. Your email account is now configured and ready to use!

Troubleshooting

“Unable to verify account name or password”

  • Double-check your email address and password
  • Ensure SSL is enabled on your domain
  • Verify your domain’s DNS is pointing to DuelHost servers

Emails not syncing?

  • Check your internet connection
  • Try removing and re-adding the account
  • Ensure “Enable this account” is checked in Preferences → Accounts

Can’t send emails?

  • Verify the outgoing mail server settings
  • Make sure your ISP isn’t blocking mail ports
  • Try checking/unchecking “Automatically manage connection settings”
